## What antimony is used for

Antimony (Sb) is a brittle metalloid used mostly as **antimony trioxide in flame retardants**, where it strengthens halogenated retardants in plastics, textiles and electronics casings. Its second big outlet is **lead-acid batteries**, in which antimony hardens the lead grids, and it has long been woven into military supply chains, from ammunition primers to infrared sensors. Newer demand comes from **solar glass**, where it improves clarity, and from liquid-metal batteries for grid storage.

### Other uses

- Hardened lead for bullets and cable sheathing
- Glass and ceramics, as a fining and opacifying agent
- Indium antimonide infrared detectors
- Catalysts for PET plastic production

## Antimony supply and demand factors

Antimony is a small market with very concentrated supply. China dominates refining, and much of the concentrate it processes comes from a handful of countries, so a single policy change can reprice the whole market. Demand, by contrast, is steady and hard to cut, because flame retardants, batteries and military uses have few drop-in substitutes. That combination of inelastic demand and fragile supply makes antimony one of the most volatile minor metals.

### What moves the price

- Chinese export controls on antimony and its compounds
- Mine supply from China, Russia and Central Asia
- Defence procurement and stockpiling
- Solar glass and battery demand

## Antimony price history

For years antimony was a quiet, steady market. That changed in 2024, when China placed antimony under export control and later banned shipments to the United States: prices outside China more than doubled to record highs, as Western buyers scrambled for supply from Russia, Central Asia and the few non-Chinese smelters.

The episode turned antimony into a textbook case of how concentrated supply meets inelastic demand. As of October 2026, the Stockatomics benchmark price is $22.87 per kg contained.

## Where antimony is produced

**China** has long dominated antimony mining and, even more, refining. Russia and Tajikistan are the other major mine producers, with smaller output from Bolivia, Turkey and Australia. The United States has no significant domestic mine production, and its single smelter relies on imported concentrate.

## Why antimony is a critical mineral

Antimony is on the **US critical minerals list** and the **EU critical raw materials list**. Mine supply and refining are concentrated in China, which has restricted exports, while demand from flame retardants, batteries and defence has few practical substitutes. The United States has almost no domestic mine supply, which makes antimony one of the clearest examples of a strategic vulnerability.

## How the antimony benchmark price is calculated

Stockatomics publishes a monthly US benchmark price for antimony in US dollars per kg contained, reading as of October 2026. The price is expressed per kg of contained antimony, so different products can be compared on the same basis. It is not a price for antimony trioxide or for a lead-antimony alloy.

### Converting the price

- Per tonne: multiply the price per kg by 1,000
- Antimony trioxide contains about 83.5% antimony, so a kilogram of trioxide carries about 0.835 kg of antimony

## FAQ

### What is the price of antimony per kg today?

Antimony costs $22.87 per kg contained in the United States as of October 2026, on the Stockatomics monthly benchmark. Stockatomics updates it every month.

### Why did antimony prices jump?

China, the dominant refiner, restricted antimony exports in 2024 and later banned shipments to the United States, forcing Western buyers to compete for limited supply elsewhere.

### What is antimony used for?

Mainly flame retardants and lead-acid batteries, plus military uses such as ammunition and infrared sensors, and solar glass.

### Does the United States produce antimony?

It has a single antimony smelter, in Montana, but almost no domestic mine supply, so it depends on imported ore and concentrate.

### How is the antimony benchmark price calculated?

The Stockatomics benchmark for antimony is a monthly US price in US dollars per kg contained, published every month and current as of October 2026.
