## What dysprosium is used for

Dysprosium (Dy) is a heavy rare earth added to **neodymium-iron-boron magnets** so that they keep their strength at high temperatures. That makes it essential in the traction motors of electric vehicles, in wind turbine generators and in industrial motors that run hot. Magnet makers have learned to use less of it through grain boundary diffusion, applying dysprosium only where it matters, yet no commercial alternative fully replaces it.

### Other uses

- Neutron-absorbing control rods in nuclear reactors
- Terfenol-D, a magnetostrictive alloy for sonar and actuators
- Metal halide lamps for stage and film lighting
- Data storage and laser materials

## Dysprosium supply and demand factors

Dysprosium is mined mainly from **ionic clay** deposits in southern China and Myanmar, which are unusually rich in heavy rare earths, and its separation is concentrated in China. Demand is concentrated too, in high-temperature permanent magnets for electric vehicles and wind turbines. That leaves the market highly exposed to Chinese policy, and since China placed heavy rare earths under export control, prices outside China have traded at a large premium to those inside it.

### What moves the price

- Chinese export controls and mining quotas
- Supply from Myanmar's mining regions
- Electric vehicle and wind turbine magnet demand
- New separation capacity outside China

## Dysprosium price history

Dysprosium was at the centre of the 2011 rare earth bubble, when Chinese export quotas sent prices up many times over before they fell back. More recently, China's export controls on heavy rare earths in 2025 split the market: prices outside China rose far above Chinese domestic prices, as magnet makers in Japan, Europe and the US competed for limited supply.

As of October 2026, the Stockatomics benchmark price is $274.30 per kg contained.

## Where dysprosium is produced

Dysprosium comes mostly from ionic clay deposits in southern **China** and **Myanmar**, which are unusually rich in heavy rare earths. **China** separates most of it, while Lynas in Malaysia began separating dysprosium in 2025, one of the first commercial sources outside China.

## Why dysprosium is a critical mineral

Dysprosium is on the **US critical minerals list**, and the heavy rare earths are on the **EU critical raw materials list**. It is hard to replace in high-temperature magnets for electric vehicles, wind turbines and defence systems, and its mining and separation are concentrated in China and Myanmar, with China controlling exports.

## How the dysprosium benchmark price is calculated

Stockatomics publishes a US benchmark price for dysprosium in US dollars per kg contained, reading as of October 2026. The price is quoted per kg of dysprosium oxide, the form in which separated rare earths are usually sold, not for a finished magnet. Because China controls most supply, prices for buyers outside China can differ widely from Chinese domestic quotes.

### Converting the price

- Dysprosium oxide contains about 87% dysprosium, so a kilogram of oxide carries about 0.87 kg of dysprosium; the metal trades at a premium to the oxide

## FAQ

### What is the price of dysprosium per kg today?

As of October 2026, the US benchmark price of dysprosium is $274.30 per kg contained. Stockatomics updates it every month.

### Why is dysprosium added to magnets?

It helps neodymium-iron-boron magnets keep their strength at high temperatures, which electric vehicle motors and wind turbines need.

### Is dysprosium a heavy rare earth?

Yes. It is one of the most valuable heavy rare earths, alongside terbium.

### Why are dysprosium prices higher outside China?

China controls most separation and has placed heavy rare earths under export control, so buyers elsewhere pay a premium for secure supply.

### How is the dysprosium benchmark price calculated?

The Stockatomics benchmark for dysprosium is a monthly US price in US dollars per kg contained, published every month and current as of October 2026.
