## What neodymium is used for

Neodymium (Nd) is the heart of **neodymium-iron-boron magnets**, the strongest permanent magnets made. They drive the traction motors of electric vehicles, the generators of direct-drive wind turbines, the motors of robots and drones, hard drives, speakers and the actuators of guided weapons. Magnet demand, more than any other use, decides the neodymium market.

### Other uses

- Nd:YAG lasers for industry and medicine
- Glass colouring, including welders' and glassblowers' goggles
- Ceramic capacitors
- Steel and magnesium alloy additives

## Neodymium supply and demand factors

Demand for neodymium rises with electric motors, wind turbines, robotics and electronics, all of which need neodymium-iron-boron magnets. Supply is mined in several countries, but **separation and metal-making** remain concentrated in China, which also sets mining quotas. Western supply chains are being rebuilt with government support, and support prices for US output have made it possible for prices inside and outside China to diverge.

### What moves the price

- Electric vehicle, wind and robotics demand
- Chinese mining quotas, separation output and export policy
- New separated supply from the US, Australia and elsewhere
- Government support programmes and price floors

## Neodymium price history

Neodymium prices rocketed in the 2011 rare earth bubble, then fell back for most of a decade. The electric vehicle boom drove a strong rally in 2021 and 2022, followed by a slump as Chinese output grew. China's 2025 export controls and US government support for domestic producers have since created a two-tier market, with prices for non-Chinese supply diverging from those inside China.

As of October 2026, the Stockatomics benchmark price is $85.14 per kg contained.

## Where neodymium is produced

**China** mines and separates most of the world's neodymium. The **United States** and **Australia** mine rare earth concentrate and have added separation capacity, and Myanmar is a significant source of feed for Chinese plants.

## Why neodymium is a critical mineral

Neodymium is on the **US critical minerals list**, and the light rare earths are on the **EU critical raw materials list**. Permanent magnets for electric vehicles, wind turbines and defence depend on it, and separation and magnet production are concentrated in China.

## How the neodymium benchmark price is calculated

Stockatomics publishes a US benchmark price for neodymium in US dollars per kg contained, reading as of October 2026. The price is quoted per kg of neodymium oxide, the form in which separated rare earths are usually sold, not for a finished magnet. Because China controls most supply, prices for buyers outside China can differ widely from Chinese domestic quotes.

### Converting the price

- Neodymium oxide contains about 86% neodymium, so a kilogram of oxide carries about 0.86 kg of neodymium; the metal trades at a premium to the oxide

## FAQ

### What is the price of neodymium per kg today?

As of October 2026, the US benchmark price of neodymium is $85.14 per kg contained. Stockatomics updates it every month.

### What is neodymium used for?

Neodymium-iron-boron magnets, the strongest permanent magnets made, for electric vehicle motors, wind turbines, robots, drones, hard drives and guided weapons.

### Is mining the bottleneck for neodymium?

Often not. Separating neodymium from other rare earths and turning it into metal and magnets are the tighter steps, and both are concentrated in China.

### Why are there different neodymium prices?

Chinese export controls and government support for Western producers, including price floors, have created separate price levels for supply inside and outside China.

### How is the neodymium benchmark price calculated?

The Stockatomics benchmark for neodymium is a monthly US price in US dollars per kg contained, published every month and current as of October 2026.
