## What palladium is used for

Palladium (Pd) earns most of its demand in **autocatalysts** for petrol cars and hybrids, where it converts harmful exhaust gases into less harmful ones. Its other markets include **electronics**, in multilayer ceramic capacitors and plating, **dentistry**, and chemical catalysts for hydrogenation and plastics production. As electric vehicles gain share, its long-term demand depends on how quickly petrol engines fade.

### Other uses

- Hydrogen purification and storage
- Chemical catalysts for plastics and fibres
- Jewellery and investment bars and coins
- Electrical contacts and sensors

## Palladium supply and demand factors

Palladium supply comes mainly from **Russia** and **South Africa**, as a by-product of nickel and platinum mining, which makes the market sensitive to sanctions, power cuts and mine problems. Demand is dominated by catalytic converters for petrol cars, so the rise of electric vehicles is a long-term headwind, partly offset by hybrids and the substitution of platinum.

### What moves the price

- Petrol and hybrid car production
- Russian supply and sanctions risk
- South African mining and power supply
- Substitution between palladium and platinum in catalysts

## Palladium price history

Palladium's price more than tripled between 2016 and 2020 as tightening emissions rules and a run of supply deficits squeezed the market, and it reached record highs in 2022 after the invasion of Ukraine raised fears over Russian supply. Prices then fell steeply as car demand weakened and the shift to electric vehicles became clearer.

As of October 2026, the Stockatomics benchmark price is $41,504 per kg contained.

## Where palladium is produced

**Russia** and **South Africa** produce most of the world's palladium: Russia from the nickel-copper mines of the Norilsk region, South Africa from the platinum mines of the Bushveld Complex. **Canada**, the **United States**, through the Stillwater mines in Montana, and **Zimbabwe** make up most of the rest.

## Why palladium is a critical mineral

Palladium is on the **US critical minerals list**, and the platinum group metals are on the **EU critical raw materials list**. Autocatalysts still depend on it, and supply is concentrated in Russia and South Africa.

## How the palladium benchmark price is calculated

Stockatomics publishes a monthly US benchmark price for palladium in US dollars per kg contained, reading as of October 2026. The price is for contained palladium metal, not for a catalytic converter.

### Converting the price

- Per troy ounce, the unit used for precious metals: divide the price per kg by 32.15
