## What potash is used for

Potash is the industry name for potassium-bearing salts, chiefly muriate of potash, and well over nine-tenths of it is used as **fertiliser**. Potassium is one of the three main plant nutrients, alongside nitrogen and phosphorus, strengthening roots and improving crop quality and resistance to drought and disease.

### Other uses

- Potassium hydroxide for soaps, detergents and alkaline batteries
- Potassium carbonate for specialty glass
- Water softening and de-icing
- Drilling fluids and food processing

## Potash supply and demand factors

Potash supply is concentrated in a few basins, above all **Canada**, Russia and Belarus, and sanctions on the last two have reshaped trade flows. Demand follows crop prices, planting and farm incomes, with large buyers in Brazil, China, India and the US. Long-term contracts with China and India often set the tone for the year.

### What moves the price

- Crop prices and farm affordability
- Russian and Belarusian exports and sanctions
- Annual contract settlements with China and India
- Canadian production and rail logistics

## Potash price history

Potash prices spiked in 2008 and again in 2022, when sanctions on Belarus and the invasion of Ukraine disrupted two of the world's largest suppliers. Prices fell back in 2023 as trade flows adjusted and farmers cut back, but the episode showed how concentrated supply is.

As of October 2026, the Stockatomics benchmark price is $0.49 per kg K2O.

## Where potash is produced

**Canada** is the largest potash producer, followed by **Russia**, **Belarus** and China, with Israel, Jordan and Germany also significant. The United States produces a small amount and imports most of its potash from Canada.

## Why potash is a critical mineral

Potash was added to the **US critical minerals list** in 2025. Food production depends on it, the United States imports most of its needs, and export supply sits in a few basins, some of them under sanctions.

## How the potash benchmark price is calculated

Stockatomics publishes a monthly US benchmark price for potash in US dollars per kg K2O, reading as of October 2026. The price is measured per kg of potassium oxide (K2O), the standard way of expressing a fertiliser's potassium content, not for a blended fertiliser.

### Converting the price

- Standard muriate of potash contains about 60% K2O, so a tonne of it carries about 600 kg of K2O: multiply the price per kg of K2O by 600 for a rough price per tonne of muriate
