## What silver is used for

Silver (Ag) has the highest electrical conductivity of any metal, and more than half of it now goes into **industrial uses**: the conductive paste on solar cells, electronics, electrical contacts and brazing alloys, and a growing share of electric vehicle components. The rest is **jewellery and silverware**, and **investment** in bars and coins.

### Other uses

- Ethylene oxide catalysts for plastics production
- Antimicrobial coatings in medicine
- Photography and imaging
- Mirrors and glass coatings

## Silver supply and demand factors

Silver supply is mostly a **by-product** of lead, zinc, copper and gold mining, so higher silver prices do little to raise output in the short run. Demand is increasingly industrial, led by solar panels, electronics and electric vehicles, on top of jewellery and investment. The market has run in deficit in recent years, drawing on above-ground stocks, and investment flows can move prices sharply.

### What moves the price

- Solar panel production and silver thrifting
- Investment demand and monetary conditions
- Base and precious metal mining output
- Electronics and electric vehicle demand

## Silver price history

Silver peaked in 2011 near its 1980 high, then spent years in a range. Rising industrial demand, led by solar panels, and a run of supply deficits set the stage for a powerful rally, and in 2025 silver climbed past its old peaks to record highs.

As of October 2026, the Stockatomics benchmark price is $2,040 per kg contained.

## Where silver is produced

**Mexico** is the world's largest silver producer, followed by **China**, **Peru**, Chile, Bolivia, Poland and Russia. Most silver is mined as a by-product of lead, zinc, copper and gold.

## Why silver is a critical mineral

Silver was added to the **US critical minerals list** in 2025. Solar panels, electronics and defence systems depend on it, and most new supply comes as a by-product of other metals, so it cannot easily respond to demand.

## How the silver benchmark price is calculated

Stockatomics publishes a monthly US benchmark price for silver in US dollars per kg contained, reading as of October 2026. The price is for contained silver metal, not for solar paste or a fabricated bar.

### Converting the price

- Per troy ounce, the unit used for precious metals: divide the price per kg by 32.15
