## What terbium is used for

Terbium (Tb) is the most potent of the heavy rare earths added to **neodymium-iron-boron magnets** to keep them working at high temperatures, so small amounts carry large weight in electric vehicle motors and wind turbines. It is also used in green **phosphors** and in **Terfenol-D**, an alloy that changes shape in a magnetic field, used in sonar and precision actuators.

### Other uses

- Solid oxide fuel cell stabiliser
- Lasers and optical isolators
- Data storage materials
- Security and X-ray phosphors

## Terbium supply and demand factors

Terbium is one of the most valuable rare earths and comes mainly from Chinese and Myanmar ionic clays. Demand is concentrated in high-temperature magnets for electric vehicles and wind turbines, with smaller uses in phosphors and Terfenol-D. Since China placed terbium under export control, prices outside China have traded well above those inside.

### What moves the price

- Chinese export controls and mining quotas
- Supply from Myanmar
- Electric vehicle and wind turbine magnet demand
- New separation capacity outside China

## Terbium price history

Terbium spiked in 2011 with the rest of the rare earths and has remained one of the most valuable. China's 2025 export controls on heavy rare earths pushed prices outside China well above those inside, as magnet makers sought secure supply.

As of October 2026, the Stockatomics benchmark price is $1,188 per kg contained.

## Where terbium is produced

Terbium comes mostly from ionic clay deposits in southern **China** and **Myanmar**, and is separated mainly in China, with Lynas in Malaysia an emerging source outside China.

## Why terbium is a critical mineral

Terbium is on the **US critical minerals list**, and the heavy rare earths are on the **EU critical raw materials list**. High-temperature magnets depend on it, and separated supply is concentrated in China, which controls its exports.

## How the terbium benchmark price is calculated

Stockatomics publishes a US benchmark price for terbium in US dollars per kg contained, reading as of October 2026. The price is quoted per kg of terbium oxide, not for a finished magnet or phosphor. Because China controls most supply, prices for buyers outside China can differ widely from Chinese domestic quotes.

### Converting the price

- Terbium oxide contains about 85% terbium

## FAQ

### What is the price of terbium per kg today?

As of October 2026, the US benchmark price of terbium is $1,188 per kg contained. Stockatomics updates it every month.

### What is terbium used for?

High-temperature permanent magnets for electric vehicles and wind turbines, green phosphors and Terfenol-D for sonar and actuators.

### Is terbium a heavy rare earth?

Yes, and one of the most valuable of all the rare earths.

### Why are terbium prices higher outside China?

China controls most terbium supply and has placed it under export control, so buyers elsewhere pay a premium for secure supply.

### How is the terbium benchmark price calculated?

The Stockatomics benchmark for terbium is a monthly US price in US dollars per kg contained, published every month and current as of October 2026.
