## What tin is used for

Tin (Sn) is the metal of **solder**, used to join the components on virtually every circuit board, so its demand follows electronics and, increasingly, AI hardware and data centres. It also coats steel in **tinplate** for food cans, stabilises PVC and goes into lead-acid battery alloys. Flat glass is made by floating molten glass on a bath of molten tin.

### Other uses

- Chemicals and PVC stabilisers
- Bronze and pewter
- Lead-acid battery alloys
- Tin oxide coatings for glass and displays

## Tin supply and demand factors

Tin supply comes from a handful of countries, led by China, Indonesia and Myanmar, followed by Peru, Bolivia, Brazil and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and several of them face political, environmental or conflict-related disruption. Demand is led by **solder** for electronics, so it follows semiconductor and electronics cycles, with AI hardware and data centres adding new demand.

### What moves the price

- Supply disruptions in Myanmar, Indonesia and Central Africa
- Semiconductor and electronics cycles
- Indonesian export rules
- Chinese smelter output

## Tin price history

Tin set records in 2011 and again in early 2022, before falling back as electronics demand slowed. Since 2023, supply disruptions in Myanmar's Wa State and in the Democratic Republic of Congo have repeatedly pushed prices higher.

As of October 2026, the Stockatomics benchmark price is $52.30 per kg contained.

## Where tin is produced

**China** and **Indonesia** are the largest tin producers, followed by **Myanmar**, **Peru**, the **Democratic Republic of Congo**, Bolivia and Brazil. The United States has no domestic tin mining.

## Why tin is a critical mineral

Tin is on the **US critical minerals list**. Solder has few substitutes at the same reliability, mine supply is concentrated in a few countries, several of them politically unstable, and the United States has no domestic tin mining.

## How the tin benchmark price is calculated

Stockatomics publishes a monthly US benchmark price for tin in US dollars per kg contained, reading as of October 2026. The price is for contained tin metal, not for solder paste or tinplate.

### Converting the price

- Per tonne: multiply the price per kg by 1,000
- Per pound: multiply the price per kg by 0.4536

## FAQ

### What is the price of tin per kg today?

Tin costs $52.30 per kg contained in the United States as of October 2026, on the Stockatomics monthly benchmark. Stockatomics updates it every month.

### What is tin used for?

Solder for electronics, tinplate for food cans, chemicals and lead-acid battery alloys, plus the molten tin bath used to make flat glass.

### Why are tin prices volatile?

Mine supply comes from a few countries, several of them politically unstable or affected by conflict, so disruptions move the market quickly.

### Does the United States produce tin?

No. It has no domestic tin mining or primary smelting and relies on imports and recycling.

### How is the tin benchmark price calculated?

The Stockatomics benchmark for tin is a monthly US price in US dollars per kg contained, published every month and current as of October 2026.
