## What titanium is used for

Titanium (Ti) has two very different markets. About nine-tenths of titanium minerals become **titanium dioxide pigment**, the bright white in paints, plastics, paper and sunscreen. The rest is reduced into **titanium metal**, light, strong and corrosion-resistant, for airframes and jet engines, armour, medical implants and chemical plants.

### Other uses

- Welding rod coatings
- Desalination and offshore equipment
- Sports equipment and consumer goods
- Titanium chemicals for catalysts

## Titanium supply and demand factors

Titanium has two linked markets. Mineral sands such as ilmenite and rutile feed mainly the **pigment** industry, so their demand follows construction and consumer goods. Titanium metal, made from sponge, follows **aerospace** and defence, where supply is concentrated in China, Japan, Russia and Kazakhstan, and Western airframe makers have worked to reduce reliance on Russian metal.

### What moves the price

- Pigment demand from paints, plastics and paper
- Commercial aircraft build rates
- Sponge supply and sanctions on Russian metal
- Mineral sands output from Africa and Australia

## Titanium price history

Titanium's two markets have moved differently. Mineral sands prices rose in 2021 and 2022 with pigment demand, then eased. Titanium metal prices have been shaped by aerospace cycles and by Western efforts to reduce reliance on Russian supply after 2022.

As of October 2026, the Stockatomics benchmark price is $0.83 per kg contained.

## Where titanium is produced

Titanium minerals are mined mainly in **China**, **Mozambique**, **South Africa**, **Australia** and **Canada**. Titanium sponge for metal is produced mainly in **China**, **Japan**, **Russia** and **Kazakhstan**.

## Why titanium is a critical mineral

Titanium is on the **US critical minerals list**, and titanium metal is on the **EU critical raw materials list**. Aerospace and defence have few substitutes for titanium metal, and sponge production is concentrated in China, Japan, Russia and Kazakhstan.

## How the titanium benchmark price is calculated

Stockatomics publishes a monthly US benchmark price for titanium in US dollars per kg contained, reading as of October 2026. The figure is a contained-titanium price. It is not a pigment price and not a price for a finished forging or for ilmenite.

### Converting the price

- Per tonne: multiply the price per kg by 1,000
