## What tungsten is used for

Tungsten (W) has the highest melting point of any metal and is extraordinarily hard and dense. More than half of it becomes **cemented carbide**, the tungsten carbide of cutting tools, mining bits and wear parts. It is also used in high-speed steels and superalloys, in **mill products** such as wire, electrodes and X-ray targets, and in **defence** for armour-piercing penetrators.

### Other uses

- Tungsten interconnects in semiconductor chips
- Radiation shielding and counterweights
- Heating elements and welding electrodes
- Plasma-facing materials for fusion research

## Tungsten supply and demand factors

China mines and processes most of the world's tungsten and has long managed supply through quotas, so the market is highly exposed to Chinese policy. Demand is led by cemented carbide tools for manufacturing, mining and construction, with defence uses adding strategic weight. Chinese export controls on tungsten products have pushed prices outside China to record levels and spurred mine development elsewhere.

### What moves the price

- Chinese mining quotas and export controls
- Manufacturing and mining activity
- Defence procurement
- New mines in Europe, Asia and Australia

## Tungsten price history

Tungsten prices were relatively stable for years, managed through Chinese quotas. That changed in 2025, when China added tungsten products to its export controls: prices climbed to record highs, as Western buyers competed for limited non-Chinese supply.

As of October 2026, the Stockatomics benchmark price is $127.28 per kg contained.

## Where tungsten is produced

**China** produces most of the world's tungsten, followed by Vietnam, Russia, Bolivia and Rwanda, with smaller mines in Austria, Spain and Portugal. The United States has no current primary tungsten mining.

## Why tungsten is a critical mineral

Tungsten is on the **US critical minerals list** and the **EU critical raw materials list**. Cutting tools, mining and defence depend on it, mine supply is concentrated in China, which controls exports, and the United States has no current primary production.

## How the tungsten benchmark price is calculated

Stockatomics publishes a monthly US benchmark price for tungsten in US dollars per kg contained, reading as of October 2026. The price is per kg of contained tungsten, not for a carbide tool.

### Converting the price

- Tungsten concentrates and ammonium paratungstate are quoted per metric tonne unit, which is 10 kg of tungsten trioxide and contains about 7.93 kg of tungsten: multiply the contained price per kg by 7.93 for an equivalent price per tonne unit
