CPUs, or central processors, are the general-purpose chips that run operating systems and applications in every server, PC and laptop. In an AI data centre they sit beside the GPUs, managing data, scheduling work and running the software that keeps the accelerators busy, and newer AI systems pair GPUs with dedicated host processors on the same board. The largest buyers are cloud providers and server makers, while Intel and AMD design most x86 processors and Arm-based chips from Nvidia, Amazon and others are growing fast.
Server CPU demand follows cloud and enterprise data-centre spending, with AI adding a new type of demand for host processors paired with GPUs. PC and laptop shipments drive the consumer side. Supply depends on leading-edge production at TSMC and Intel, competing with GPUs and other AI chips for the same advanced capacity and packaging. Competition between x86 chips from Intel and AMD and Arm-based designs from Nvidia, Amazon and others is reshaping the market.
CPU prices per unit have trended upwards as processors gained more cores, larger caches and more advanced manufacturing, with server chips rising fastest. The PC slump of 2022 and 2023 weighed on consumer chips, while data-centre demand and AI host processors have pushed the mix towards larger, costlier parts. Monthly figures also reflect the balance between low-cost PC chips and high-end server processors shipped in that month.
Intel and AMD design most x86 CPUs, while Arm-based server chips come from Nvidia, Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft and Ampere. Intel makes many of its chips in its own fabs in the United States, Ireland and Israel, while AMD and the Arm designers rely mainly on TSMC in Taiwan. Packaging and testing take place largely in Malaysia, Vietnam, Taiwan and China.
The CPU benchmark is a price per processor. Stockatomics takes the monthly value and number of CPUs shipped into the United States from every origin, works out the price per chip and keeps the main grade, the shipments priced within the normal range of the past year. CPUs range from low-cost laptop chips to high-end server processors, so the monthly price also reflects the mix shipped, and the Terminal shows premium-priced shipments separately. The series starts in mid-2024.

A CPU is a general-purpose processor that runs operating systems and applications, while a GPU has thousands of smaller cores built to process many calculations at once. AI systems use both, with GPUs doing the heavy maths and CPUs managing data and software.
Every AI server needs host processors to manage data, run software and keep the GPUs busy, and newer AI systems pair GPUs with dedicated CPUs on the same board.
Intel and AMD design most x86 CPUs, while Nvidia, Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft and Ampere design Arm-based server chips, most of which are made by TSMC.
As of October 2026, the Stockatomics price of CPUs is $381.96 per unit. Stockatomics updates it every month.
The listed companies Stockatomics links as buyers of CPUs are Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL), Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), Dell Technologies (NYSE: DELL), Hon Hai Precision Industry (TPE: 2317), HP (NYSE: HPQ), Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) and Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT).
The products in the Stockatomics model that use CPUs are the AI server rack and the laptop.
