Scandium (Sc) has a small but strategic market. Its largest use is in solid oxide fuel cells, where scandia-stabilised zirconia makes the electrolyte. Tiny additions also turn aluminum into much stronger, weldable aluminum-scandium alloys for aerospace parts, 3D-printing powders and sporting goods. Scandium aluminum nitride is emerging in the RF filters of 5G devices.
Scandium has never been mined at scale on its own; it is recovered in small amounts from titanium, nickel and rare earth processing. Supply comes from China, Russia, the Philippines and Canada, and the market is tiny. Demand is limited mainly because supply is unreliable, which has held back aerospace alloys that could use it in quantity.
Scandium is sold in small lots, mostly under private agreements, so its price history is thin and moves in steps rather than cycles.
As of October 2026, the Stockatomics benchmark price is $5,200 per kg contained.
Scandium is recovered in small amounts as a by-product of titanium, nickel and rare earth processing, in China, Russia, the Philippines and Canada, where a titanium smelter in Quebec has produced scandium oxide since 2022.
Scandium is on the US critical minerals list and the EU critical raw materials list. Fuel cells and advanced aluminum alloys have few substitutes for it, and commercial supply is a small by-product from a few countries.
Stockatomics publishes a US benchmark price for scandium in US dollars per kg contained, reading as of October 2026. The price is quoted per kg of oxide, not for an aluminum-scandium alloy. Scandium is sold in small lots, so its price moves less often than those of the higher-volume minerals.

Scandium costs $5,200 per kg contained in the United States as of October 2026, on the Stockatomics monthly benchmark. Stockatomics updates it every month.
Solid oxide fuel cells and aluminum-scandium alloys for aerospace and 3D printing, with emerging use in 5G radio filters.
It is widely dispersed in the Earth's crust and rarely concentrated, so it is recovered only as a by-product, in small amounts.
Yes, if reliable supply lets aerospace and car makers adopt scandium-strengthened aluminum alloys on a larger scale.
