Lynas Rare Earths is the largest producer of separated rare earths outside China, headquartered in Perth. It mines the rich Mt Weld deposit in Western Australia, processes the ore at Kalgoorlie and separates the rare earths in Malaysia, where it has also started producing the heavy rare earths dysprosium and terbium.
Lynas Rare Earths is linked to neodymium and praseodymium, the two rare earths at the heart of the permanent magnets used in electric vehicle motors, wind turbines, robots and defence systems. It produces separated oxides of both, together with the heavier rare earths dysprosium and terbium, which allow magnets to keep working at high temperatures. As the main producer outside China, Lynas supplies magnet makers in Japan and further afield.
Mt Weld lies near Laverton in Western Australia, with a processing facility at Kalgoorlie. Lynas Rare Earths' separation plant, Lynas Malaysia, is at Gebeng near Kuantan, and it has worked with the US government on plans for processing in Texas.
