Europium (Eu) is the rare earth behind red and blue phosphors, which turned fluorescent lamps, older television screens and some LED lighting the right colour. Its fluorescence also guards the euro banknotes against counterfeiting. Demand has fallen as LEDs replaced fluorescent lighting, leaving a small market supplied mainly as a by-product.
Europium is a by-product of rare earth separation, and its market has shrunk as LEDs replaced fluorescent lamps, which used europium phosphors in volume. With demand now modest and supply tied to output of other rare earths, the market is quiet, though it remains concentrated in China.
Europium was once one of the most valuable rare earths, thanks to its role in fluorescent lamp phosphors. After the 2011 spike, its price fell further than most, as LEDs replaced fluorescent lighting and demand shrank.
As of October 2026, the Stockatomics benchmark price is $31.26 per kg contained.
Europium is separated from rare earth ores as a by-product, mainly in China, from both light rare earth deposits and the ionic clays of the south. Because nobody mines for europium alone, its output follows the economics of the magnet rare earths.
Europium is on the US critical minerals list, and the heavy rare earths are on the EU critical raw materials list. Volumes are small, separation is concentrated in China, and its uses in phosphors, anti-counterfeiting and nuclear control have no ready substitute.
Stockatomics publishes a US benchmark price for europium in US dollars per kg contained, reading as of October 2026. The price is quoted per kg of oxide, not for a phosphor blend. US trade in europium is thin, so its price moves less often than those of the higher-volume minerals.

Red and blue phosphors in lighting and displays, and anti-counterfeiting features, including on euro banknotes.
LED lighting has replaced fluorescent lamps, which used europium phosphors in large volumes.
Yes, one of the heavy rare earths in the EU's grouping.
