Over the past month the price has slipped 5.8%, and it is +9.0% over the year.
Its 12-month range runs from a low of $15.37 to a high of $18.30.
It is +9.0% over the past year and −9.0% over five years.
Nickel (Ni) goes mainly into stainless steel, which takes about two-thirds of world demand. The fastest-growing market is batteries, where high-nickel cathodes give electric vehicles their range. Nickel's resistance to heat and corrosion also makes it the base of the superalloys in jet engines and power turbines.
Nickel supply has been transformed by Indonesia, where Chinese-backed processing plants have turned laterite ore into vast new volumes of nickel pig iron and battery-grade intermediates. That surge has pushed many higher-cost mines elsewhere into losses or closure. Demand is led by stainless steel, with batteries the main growth market, though the rise of lithium iron phosphate cathodes has tempered nickel's battery growth.
Nickel has had some of the most dramatic episodes in metals trading. In March 2022, a short squeeze on the London Metal Exchange doubled the price in hours and led the exchange to suspend trading and cancel deals. Since then, a flood of Indonesian supply has pushed prices down to levels that forced many mines in Australia and elsewhere to close.
As of October 2026, the Stockatomics benchmark price is $17.24 per kg contained.
Indonesia produces more than half of the world's nickel, followed by the Philippines, Russia, Canada, Australia and New Caledonia. Processing of Indonesian ore into nickel pig iron and battery intermediates is largely Chinese-owned.
Nickel is on the US critical minerals list and the EU critical raw materials list. Stainless steel, batteries and superalloys depend on it, and a large share of new supply comes from Indonesia, mostly through Chinese-owned processing.
Stockatomics publishes a monthly US benchmark price for nickel in US dollars per kg contained, reading as of October 2026. The price is for contained nickel metal. It is not a price for nickel pig iron or for a battery cathode.

Nickel costs $17.24 per kg contained in the United States as of October 2026, on the Stockatomics monthly benchmark. Stockatomics updates it every month.
Mainly stainless steel, which takes about two-thirds of demand, plus battery cathodes for electric vehicles, superalloys for jet engines, and plating.
A surge of supply from Indonesia, built largely with Chinese investment, has outpaced demand and pushed many higher-cost mines elsewhere into losses or closure.
In March 2022 a short squeeze on the London Metal Exchange doubled the price within hours, and the exchange suspended trading and cancelled deals, a turning point for confidence in the nickel market.
