It is +7.2% over the past year.
Gadolinium (Gd) is used above all in MRI contrast agents, whose strong magnetic properties sharpen images of soft tissue and blood vessels. It also absorbs neutrons better than almost any other element, making it valuable in nuclear reactors as a burnable poison and in shielding. Small amounts strengthen some permanent magnet grades.
Gadolinium comes from rare earth separation, mostly in China, and is produced in moderate volumes as a by-product of magnet metals. Demand is steady, anchored by MRI contrast agents and nuclear applications, with some use in magnets. Its inclusion in China's export controls on medium and heavy rare earths has made supply outside China less certain.
Gadolinium's price has moved with the rare earth cycle, rising in 2011 and with the magnet boom of 2021 and 2022, then easing. Its inclusion in China's 2025 export controls on medium and heavy rare earths has added a new layer of uncertainty for buyers outside China.
As of October 2026, the Stockatomics benchmark price is $34.58 per kg contained.
Gadolinium is separated from rare earth ores, mostly in China, as part of the medium rare earth stream that also yields samarium and europium. Separation plants outside China, in Malaysia, Estonia and elsewhere, produce smaller amounts.
Gadolinium is on the US critical minerals list, and the heavy rare earths are on the EU critical raw materials list. MRI contrast agents and nuclear applications have few substitutes, separation is concentrated in China, and it is subject to Chinese export controls.
Stockatomics publishes a US benchmark price for gadolinium in US dollars per kg contained, reading as of October 2026. The price is quoted per kg of oxide, not for an MRI agent. US trade in gadolinium is thin, so its price moves less often than those of the higher-volume minerals.

Which listed companies produce it, and how much of their value depends on it.
Gadolinium costs $34.58 per kg contained in the United States as of October 2026, on the Stockatomics monthly benchmark. Stockatomics updates it every month.
Mainly MRI contrast agents, plus nuclear reactor control and some magnets.
Yes, one of the medium-to-heavy rare earths.
Yes. China, which separates most of it, placed gadolinium under export control in 2025.
