Hafnium (Hf) is always found with zirconium and is separated from it mainly to make hafnium-free zirconium for nuclear fuel. Its own largest use is in superalloys for jet engine turbine blades and in the niobium-hafnium alloys of rocket thrusters. In semiconductors, hafnium oxide is the high-k gate dielectric inside advanced chips, and in nuclear reactors hafnium's appetite for neutrons makes it ideal for control rods.
Hafnium exists only as a by-product of zirconium refining for the nuclear industry, so its supply is fixed by how much hafnium-free zirconium is made, not by hafnium demand. Only a few plants in France, the US, China and Russia can separate the two. Demand from aerospace superalloys, semiconductors and nuclear control rods has grown faster than that by-product supply, making the market prone to sharp tightness.
Hafnium's price rose sharply in 2022 and 2023 as recovering jet engine production and semiconductor demand outran by-product supply from zirconium refining. Because supply cannot respond to price, hafnium tends to move in long, steep steps rather than smooth cycles.
As of October 2026, the Stockatomics benchmark price is $5,039 per kg contained.
Hafnium is separated from zirconium at a few plants, mainly in France and the United States, with others in China and Russia. Supply is tied to how much hafnium-free zirconium the nuclear industry needs.
Hafnium is on the US critical minerals list and the EU critical raw materials list. Aerospace superalloys, nuclear control rods and advanced chips depend on it, and only a few plants in the world can separate it from zirconium.
Stockatomics publishes a monthly US benchmark price for hafnium in US dollars per kg contained, reading as of October 2026. The price is for contained hafnium metal, not for a superalloy or for nuclear-grade zirconium.

It is only produced as a by-product of making nuclear-grade zirconium, so supply cannot rise to meet growing demand from aerospace and chips.
