Tin (Sn) is the metal of solder, used to join the components on virtually every circuit board, so its demand follows electronics and, increasingly, AI hardware and data centres. It also coats steel in tinplate for food cans, stabilises PVC and goes into lead-acid battery alloys. Flat glass is made by floating molten glass on a bath of molten tin.
Tin supply comes from a handful of countries, led by China, Indonesia and Myanmar, followed by Peru, Bolivia, Brazil and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and several of them face political, environmental or conflict-related disruption. Demand is led by solder for electronics, so it follows semiconductor and electronics cycles, with AI hardware and data centres adding new demand.
Tin set records in 2011 and again in early 2022, before falling back as electronics demand slowed. Since 2023, supply disruptions in Myanmar's Wa State and in the Democratic Republic of Congo have repeatedly pushed prices higher.
As of October 2026, the Stockatomics benchmark price is $52.30 per kg contained.
China and Indonesia are the largest tin producers, followed by Myanmar, Peru, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Bolivia and Brazil. The United States has no domestic tin mining.
Tin is on the US critical minerals list. Solder has few substitutes at the same reliability, mine supply is concentrated in a few countries, several of them politically unstable, and the United States has no domestic tin mining.
Stockatomics publishes a monthly US benchmark price for tin in US dollars per kg contained, reading as of October 2026. The price is for contained tin metal, not for solder paste or tinplate.

Tin costs $52.30 per kg contained in the United States as of October 2026, on the Stockatomics monthly benchmark. Stockatomics updates it every month.
Solder for electronics, tinplate for food cans, chemicals and lead-acid battery alloys, plus the molten tin bath used to make flat glass.
Mine supply comes from a few countries, several of them politically unstable or affected by conflict, so disruptions move the market quickly.
No. It has no domestic tin mining or primary smelting and relies on imports and recycling.
