Alcoa is a Pittsburgh-based producer that runs the whole aluminum chain, from bauxite mines through alumina refineries to smelters. Its operations stretch across Australia, the Americas and Europe, making it one of the few Western producers with real scale at every stage. Alongside primary metal it sells alumina to other smelters, so its fortunes track both halves of the market.
Aluminum is Alcoa's only critical mineral, and it takes part in every stage of making it. Bauxite from its mines feeds its alumina refineries, which in turn feed smelters producing primary metal for packaging, transport, construction and power lines. Because aluminum is light, conductive and endlessly recyclable, demand for it rises with electric vehicles, grid expansion and lighter aerospace and defence components.
Alcoa mines bauxite in Western Australia's Darling Range and in Brazil, refines alumina in Western Australia, Brazil and Spain, and smelts aluminum in the United States, Canada, Norway, Iceland and Spain. Its Canadian smelters in Quebec, among the most efficient in its system, run on hydropower.
