Century Aluminum is one of the last large primary aluminum producers in the United States, headquartered in Chicago. It runs smelters in Kentucky and South Carolina, plus a large one in Iceland, and has bought into an alumina refinery in Jamaica to secure its raw material. With US smelting capacity shrinking for decades, Century's plants carry strategic weight well beyond their size.
Aluminum is Century Aluminum's only critical mineral. It produces primary aluminum, including high-purity grades used in aerospace and defence, at smelters in Kentucky, South Carolina and Iceland. With US smelting reduced to a handful of plants, its domestic output matters for defence supply chains as well as for a market that otherwise leans on imports from Canada and the Middle East.
Century Aluminum operates smelters at Sebree and Hawesville in Kentucky, Mt Holly in South Carolina and Grundartangi in Iceland, the last powered by geothermal and hydro energy. It also owns a majority interest in the Jamalco alumina refinery in Jamaica.
