China Hongqiao is one of the world's largest aluminum producers, based in Shandong province in eastern China. Having grown out of a textiles group, it is now a giant in alumina and primary aluminum, securing much of its bauxite from Guinea through a consortium in which it is a partner. In recent years it has moved part of its smelting capacity to Yunnan in the south-west to run on hydropower.
Aluminum is China Hongqiao's critical mineral. It produces alumina as well as primary aluminum, and supplies semi-finished products to manufacturers across China. Integration from Guinean bauxite through to smelting gives it a grip on costs that few rivals can match, while the shift to hydropower in Yunnan is meant to cut the carbon intensity of its metal, something carmakers and packaging customers increasingly care about.
China Hongqiao's main base is in Zouping and Binzhou in Shandong, where it runs alumina refineries and aluminum smelters, with further capacity relocated to Yunnan. Its bauxite comes chiefly from Guinea's Boké region through the consortium it belongs to.
