Alpha Metallurgical Resources is a US miner of metallurgical coal, the grade used to make steel in blast furnaces. Based in Bristol, Tennessee, it runs mines across Virginia and West Virginia, exporting much of its output to steelmakers in Asia, Europe and South America through an East Coast terminal in which it holds a stake.
Metallurgical coal is Alpha Metallurgical Resources' critical mineral, a steelmaking input recently added to the US critical minerals list. Its mines produce high-volatile and low-volatile coking coals, which steelmakers blend to make coke, the fuel and reducing agent that turns iron ore into iron. There is still no practical substitute for it in blast-furnace steelmaking.
Alpha Metallurgical Resources' mines are concentrated in the Central Appalachian coalfields of Virginia and West Virginia, with preparation plants and rail links that carry coal to the East Coast. Much of its export tonnage moves through Dominion Terminal Associates in Newport News, Virginia, in which it holds an interest.

Mostly to steelmakers overseas, in Asia, Europe and South America, with the rest going to US customers.
