BHP is one of the world's largest mining companies, headquartered in Melbourne. Copper and iron ore account for most of the business, with metallurgical coal from Queensland and a large potash project in Canada rounding out the portfolio. It has spent recent years tilting towards the commodities it expects to gain from electrification and steelmaking, with copper firmly in front.
BHP is linked to copper and metallurgical coal. Copper comes from Escondida in Chile, the largest copper mine in the world, together with Spence, its Copper South Australia hub and a stake in Antamina in Peru. Metallurgical coal comes from the Bowen Basin in Queensland, which supplies coking coal to steelmakers across Asia. Copper is where it is investing most heavily, betting on demand from grids, electric vehicles and data centres.
In Chile, BHP runs Escondida and Spence in the Atacama Desert; in South Australia, Olympic Dam, Prominent Hill and Carrapateena make up its Copper South Australia hub. Its metallurgical coal comes from the Bowen Basin in Queensland, run with Mitsubishi, its iron ore from Western Australia's Pilbara, and the Jansen potash project is under construction in Saskatchewan.
