Anglo American is a London-headquartered mining group with South African roots stretching back more than a century. It is reshaping itself around copper, premium iron ore and crop nutrients, with several other businesses earmarked for sale or already separated, including its platinum arm, now listed in its own right as Valterra Platinum. Copper from Chile and Peru sits at the centre of the strategy.
Anglo American is linked to four critical minerals. Copper, from its Chilean and Peruvian mines, is the core of its future. It has also produced metallurgical coal in Queensland, nickel in Brazil and manganese through its interest in a southern African manganese business, although these sit among the assets it has decided to sell. Copper goes into power grids, electric vehicles and data centres, while the others feed steel, stainless steel and batteries.
Anglo American's copper comes from Los Bronces and its share of Collahuasi in Chile, and from Quellaveco in Peru. Its iron ore operations are in South Africa, through Kumba, and in Brazil at Minas-Rio, while its crop nutrients project, Woodsmith, is being developed in North Yorkshire.
