Open in TerminalImpala Platinum, known as Implats, is one of the world's largest producers of platinum group metals, headquartered in Johannesburg. Its mines sit on South Africa's Bushveld Complex and Zimbabwe's Great Dyke, and it also owns a palladium mine in Ontario. Its refineries near Johannesburg treat its own output as well as concentrate bought from other miners.
Impala Platinum is linked to platinum, palladium and rhodium, which it mines together from the same ore bodies. Platinum and palladium go mainly into catalytic converters, with growing use in hydrogen fuel cells and electrolysers, while rhodium is prized for emissions control. Nickel, copper and cobalt are recovered as by-products.
Impala Platinum mines at Impala Rustenburg, Marula and Two Rivers in South Africa's Bushveld Complex, together with Impala Bafokeng, formerly Royal Bafokeng Platinum. Zimplats runs its operations on the Great Dyke in Zimbabwe, while Impala Canada operates the Lac des Iles palladium mine in Ontario. Its refineries are at Springs, east of Johannesburg.
