Over the past month the price is broadly flat, at −1.6%.

It is +23.9% over the past year and +57.9% over five years.
Platinum (Pt) has three pillars of demand: autocatalysts, mainly for diesel engines; jewellery; and a broad industrial base, from the glass fibre and chemical industries to petroleum refining. Its newest market is hydrogen, where platinum is the catalyst in fuel cells and in PEM electrolysers, alongside investment demand for bars and coins.
Platinum supply is dominated by South Africa, with Russia and Zimbabwe next, and mine output has struggled for years with ageing shafts, power shortages and underinvestment. Demand spans diesel catalysts, jewellery, industry and investment, with hydrogen fuel cells and electrolysers as long-term growth. The market has run in deficit in recent years, drawing down above-ground stocks.
Platinum peaked in 2008 and then spent years in decline, especially after the diesel emissions scandal of 2015 hit demand for diesel catalysts. A run of supply deficits from 2023, as South African output struggled, set up a strong rally in 2025 that took prices to their highest levels in over a decade.
As of October 2026, the Stockatomics benchmark price is $53,892 per kg contained.
South Africa produces most of the world's platinum from the Bushveld Complex, the largest platinum group metals deposit known, followed by Russia and Zimbabwe, whose Great Dyke is the next richest source. Canada and the United States produce smaller amounts.
Platinum is on the US critical minerals list, and the platinum group metals are on the EU critical raw materials list. Catalysts, fuel cells and electrolysers depend on it, and supply is concentrated in South Africa and Russia.
Stockatomics publishes a monthly US benchmark price for platinum in US dollars per kg contained, reading as of October 2026. The price is for contained platinum metal, not for a catalytic converter or a fuel cell stack.

Catalytic converters, mainly for diesel engines, jewellery, industrial uses from glass fibre to chemicals, and hydrogen fuel cells and electrolysers.
South Africa produces most of the world's platinum, followed by Russia and Zimbabwe.
Several years of supply deficits, as South African output struggled with ageing mines and power problems, drained above-ground stocks and set up a strong rally.
