Magnesium has fallen 2.0% in the past month.
Over the past 12 months it has ranged from $2.52 to $4.07 per kg contained.
Over one year the price has changed −19.7%, and over five years +28.6%.
Magnesium (Mg) is the lightest structural metal. Its largest use is as an alloying element in aluminum, from drinks cans to car parts, and it is also cast on its own into lightweight die-cast parts such as steering wheels, seat frames and laptop housings. Steelmakers use it to remove sulphur, and it is the reducing agent in the Kroll process that makes titanium metal.
China produces the great majority of the world's primary magnesium, mostly through an energy-intensive process in a few provinces, so supply is acutely sensitive to Chinese energy and environmental policy. Demand is spread across aluminum alloys, die casting, steel desulphurisation and titanium production. With the US lacking active primary production, American buyers depend on imports and recycled metal.
Magnesium's most dramatic moment came in late 2021, when Chinese power curbs shut smelters in Shaanxi province and prices roughly tripled within weeks, alarming aluminum and car makers worldwide. Prices fell back as production resumed, but the episode showed how much the world depends on a single country.
As of October 2026, the Stockatomics benchmark price is $3.99 per kg contained.
China produces most of the world's primary magnesium, mostly in Shaanxi province. Russia, Israel, Kazakhstan and Brazil are smaller producers. The United States has no active primary production and relies on imports and recycled metal.
Magnesium is on the US critical minerals list and the EU critical raw materials list. Aluminum alloys, steel and titanium production depend on it, primary production is overwhelmingly concentrated in China, and the United States has no active primary production.
Stockatomics publishes a monthly US benchmark price for magnesium in US dollars per kg contained, reading as of October 2026. The price is for contained magnesium metal, not for a die-casting alloy.

China produces the great majority of the world's primary magnesium, mostly in Shaanxi province, using an energy-intensive process.
It has no active primary production, so it relies on imports and recycled metal, a gap that worries aluminum and titanium producers.
