Potash is the industry name for potassium-bearing salts, chiefly muriate of potash, and well over nine-tenths of it is used as fertiliser. Potassium is one of the three main plant nutrients, alongside nitrogen and phosphorus, strengthening roots and improving crop quality and resistance to drought and disease.
Potash supply is concentrated in a few basins, above all Canada, Russia and Belarus, and sanctions on the last two have reshaped trade flows. Demand follows crop prices, planting and farm incomes, with large buyers in Brazil, China, India and the US. Long-term contracts with China and India often set the tone for the year.
Potash prices spiked in 2008 and again in 2022, when sanctions on Belarus and the invasion of Ukraine disrupted two of the world's largest suppliers. Prices fell back in 2023 as trade flows adjusted and farmers cut back, but the episode showed how concentrated supply is.
As of October 2026, the Stockatomics benchmark price is $0.49 per kg K2O.
Canada is the largest potash producer, followed by Russia, Belarus and China, with Israel, Jordan and Germany also significant. The United States produces a small amount and imports most of its potash from Canada.
Potash was added to the US critical minerals list in 2025. Food production depends on it, the United States imports most of its needs, and export supply sits in a few basins, some of them under sanctions.
Stockatomics publishes a monthly US benchmark price for potash in US dollars per kg K2O, reading as of October 2026. The price is measured per kg of potassium oxide (K2O), the standard way of expressing a fertiliser's potassium content, not for a blended fertiliser.
