The price has reached its highest level of the past year, $0.091 per kg phosphate rock.
Its 12-month range runs from a low of $0.086 to a high of $0.091.
It is −2.0% over the past year and +31.6% over five years.
Phosphate rock is the world's only practical source of phosphorus, and most of it becomes fertiliser. It is converted into phosphoric acid and then into products such as diammonium phosphate and monoammonium phosphate, without which modern crop yields would be impossible. A smaller, fast-growing market is lithium iron phosphate batteries, which need purified phosphoric acid.
Phosphate rock supply is concentrated: Morocco holds most of the world's known reserves, while China is the largest producer and has restricted fertiliser exports to protect its farmers. Demand follows crop prices and planting decisions, plus a growing industrial need for purified phosphoric acid in lithium iron phosphate batteries.
Phosphate prices spiked in 2008 and again in 2021 and 2022, when Chinese export restrictions, sanctions on Russian and Belarusian fertiliser and soaring energy costs combined. Prices eased after 2022 but have stayed above their long-run average.
As of October 2026, the Stockatomics benchmark price is $0.091 per kg phosphate rock.
China is the largest phosphate rock producer, followed by Morocco, the United States, Russia, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. Morocco holds most of the world's known reserves.
Phosphate was added to the US critical minerals list in 2025, and phosphate rock is on the EU critical raw materials list. Food production depends on it, there is no substitute for phosphorus in agriculture, and traded supply is concentrated in Morocco and China.
Stockatomics publishes a monthly US benchmark price for phosphate in US dollars per kg phosphate rock, reading as of October 2026. The figure is a price for phosphate rock as traded, not for a finished fertiliser such as diammonium phosphate, and not for contained phosphorus.
