Its 12-month range runs from a low of $0.24 to a high of $1.42.
It is −20.1% over the past year and +4.2% over five years.
Manganese (Mn) is indispensable to steel: about nine-tenths of it is used, mostly as ferromanganese and silicomanganese, to remove oxygen and sulphur and to add strength. A smaller, faster-growing market is batteries, where high-purity manganese sulphate goes into nickel-manganese-cobalt cathodes and newer manganese-rich and lithium manganese iron phosphate chemistries.
Manganese demand is overwhelmingly steel, so it rises and falls with steel output, especially in China. Ore supply is led by South Africa, Gabon and Australia, and a disruption at a major mine can tighten the market quickly. A growing second market is battery-grade manganese, where China dominates refining.
Manganese ore prices generally follow Chinese steel output, but supply shocks can override that. In 2024, a cyclone damaged one of the world's largest manganese mines in Australia, halting its exports for about a year and sending ore prices sharply higher.
As of October 2026, the Stockatomics benchmark price is $0.58 per kg contained.
South Africa is the largest manganese ore producer, followed by Gabon, Australia, Ghana and China. China refines most battery-grade manganese. The United States has no domestic manganese mining.
Manganese is on the US critical minerals list and the EU critical raw materials list. Steel cannot do without it, battery demand is rising, and the United States has no domestic manganese mining.
Stockatomics publishes a monthly US benchmark price for manganese in US dollars per kg contained, reading as of October 2026. The price is per kg of contained manganese, not for a particular ferroalloy or ore grade.

Manganese costs $0.58 per kg contained in the United States as of October 2026, on the Stockatomics monthly benchmark. Stockatomics updates it every month.
Steel, which takes about nine-tenths of demand, as manganese removes oxygen and sulphur and adds strength. Batteries, aluminum alloys and chemicals take the rest.
Yes. High-purity manganese sulphate goes into nickel-manganese-cobalt cathodes, and manganese-rich and lithium manganese iron phosphate chemistries could raise battery demand further.
Mainly South Africa, Gabon and Australia, with China refining most of the battery-grade material.
