The price is down 5.5% over the past month and −4.7% over the past year.
In the past year the monthly price has moved between $2.75 and $3.14.
Measured over longer windows, silicon is −4.7% on the year and +18.7% over five years.
Silicon metal, made by smelting quartz, has four big markets. Aluminum alloys for cast engine parts and wheels take a large share, silicones for sealants, lubricants, cosmetics and medical products another, and the purest grades become polysilicon for solar panels and semiconductors. Ferrosilicon, its iron-rich cousin, is used in steelmaking.
Silicon metal production is concentrated in China, where cheap power and quartz support most of the world's smelting capacity. Demand comes from aluminum alloys, silicones and, through polysilicon, solar panels and semiconductors, so the solar industry's boom and bust cycles feed directly into the silicon market. Western producers depend on trade protection to compete.
Silicon metal prices spiked in late 2021, when Chinese power restrictions curtailed smelters in Yunnan and other provinces, and roughly tripled in a matter of weeks. They fell back as production resumed, and a later solar industry glut kept prices under pressure.
As of October 2026, the Stockatomics benchmark price is $2.85 per kg contained.
China produces most of the world's silicon metal and ferrosilicon, using cheap power and abundant quartz in provinces such as Xinjiang, Yunnan and Sichuan. Brazil, Norway, Russia, the United States and France produce most of the rest, and the US relies on imports for much of its needs.
Silicon was added to the US critical minerals list in 2025, and silicon metal is on the EU critical raw materials list. Aluminum alloys, silicones, chips and solar panels depend on it, and metal production is concentrated in China.
Stockatomics publishes a monthly US benchmark price for silicon in US dollars per kg contained, reading as of October 2026. The figure is a price for silicon metal, not for ferrosilicon, polysilicon or a semiconductor wafer.
