Tungsten (W) has the highest melting point of any metal and is extraordinarily hard and dense. More than half of it becomes cemented carbide, the tungsten carbide of cutting tools, mining bits and wear parts. It is also used in high-speed steels and superalloys, in mill products such as wire, electrodes and X-ray targets, and in defence for armour-piercing penetrators.
China mines and processes most of the world's tungsten and has long managed supply through quotas, so the market is highly exposed to Chinese policy. Demand is led by cemented carbide tools for manufacturing, mining and construction, with defence uses adding strategic weight. Chinese export controls on tungsten products have pushed prices outside China to record levels and spurred mine development elsewhere.
Tungsten prices were relatively stable for years, managed through Chinese quotas. That changed in 2025, when China added tungsten products to its export controls: prices climbed to record highs, as Western buyers competed for limited non-Chinese supply.
As of October 2026, the Stockatomics benchmark price is $127.28 per kg contained.
China produces most of the world's tungsten, followed by Vietnam, Russia, Bolivia and Rwanda, with smaller mines in Austria, Spain and Portugal. The United States has no current primary tungsten mining.
Tungsten is on the US critical minerals list and the EU critical raw materials list. Cutting tools, mining and defence depend on it, mine supply is concentrated in China, which controls exports, and the United States has no current primary production.
Stockatomics publishes a monthly US benchmark price for tungsten in US dollars per kg contained, reading as of October 2026. The price is per kg of contained tungsten, not for a carbide tool.

Tungsten costs $127.28 per kg contained in the United States as of October 2026, on the Stockatomics monthly benchmark. Stockatomics updates it every month.
Cemented carbide cutting tools and mining bits, high-speed steels, wire and electrodes, and defence uses such as armour-piercing rounds.
China, which dominates supply, added tungsten products to its export controls in 2025, pushing prices outside China to record highs.
It has no current primary tungsten mining, though several projects are being explored.
