Boliden is a Swedish metals group that mines and smelts copper, zinc, lead and nickel, mostly across the Nordic countries. Based in Stockholm, it is unusual among European miners in owning both mines and smelters, and its smelters process a large share of recycled material, electronic scrap included. That combination yields a steady flow of precious and minor metals as by-products.
Boliden mines and smelts copper, zinc, lead and nickel, recovering tellurium as a by-product of its smelting. Copper comes chiefly from Aitik in northern Sweden, zinc and lead from Garpenberg and its other zinc mines, and nickel from Kevitsa in Finland. Its smelters also turn out gold, silver and a range of minor metals from both ore and recycled material, which makes Boliden one of Europe's most important home-grown sources of several critical minerals.
Boliden mines at Aitik, Garpenberg, the Boliden Area and Zinkgruvan in Sweden, at Kevitsa in Finland, at Neves-Corvo in Portugal and at Tara in Ireland. Its smelters are Rönnskär in Sweden, Harjavalta and Kokkola in Finland, and Odda in Norway.
