Vale is one of the world's largest mining companies, headquartered in Rio de Janeiro. Iron ore is its core business, while its base metals arm mines nickel in Canada, Brazil and Indonesia, together with copper in Brazil's Carajás region. Vale is also an important producer of cobalt, recovered as a by-product of its Canadian nickel operations.
Vale is linked to nickel, copper and cobalt. Nickel comes from Sudbury, Voisey's Bay and Thompson in Canada, Onça Puma in Brazil and PT Vale Indonesia, while copper comes from Salobo and Sossego in Carajás. Cobalt is recovered at its Canadian nickel refineries, making Vale one of the few large cobalt suppliers outside the Democratic Republic of Congo and Indonesia.
Vale's nickel operations are Sudbury in Ontario, Voisey's Bay and the Long Harbour refinery in Newfoundland and Labrador, Thompson in Manitoba, Onça Puma in Pará, Brazil, and PT Vale Indonesia on Sulawesi. Copper comes from Salobo and Sossego in Pará, while its iron ore heartland is Carajás and Minas Gerais.
