Zinc has moved little in the past month (−0.2%).
Over the past 12 months it has ranged from $3.13 to $3.80 per kg contained.
Over one year the price has changed +31.7%, and over five years +25.6%.
Zinc (Zn) is used mostly for galvanising, the zinc coating that protects steel from rust in buildings, bridges, cars and power infrastructure. It also goes into die-casting alloys, brass, and zinc oxide for tyres, ceramics and sunscreen, while zinc's role as a micronutrient makes it important to crops and animal feed.
Zinc demand follows galvanised steel for construction, infrastructure and cars, with China the largest consumer. Supply depends on mines in China, Peru, Australia and India, and on smelters, whose profitability hinges on treatment charges and energy costs. Smelter closures in high-cost regions can tighten refined supply even when concentrate is plentiful.
Zinc reached a record in 2007, then cycled with construction and Chinese demand. In 2022, soaring energy costs closed European smelters and pushed prices higher, before easing as energy costs fell.
As of October 2026, the Stockatomics benchmark price is $3.79 per kg contained.
China is the largest zinc producer, followed by Peru, Australia, India, the United States and Mexico. In the US, zinc is mined mainly in Alaska, at the Red Dog mine, and in Tennessee and Missouri, but much of the concentrate is exported and the country imports most of its refined zinc.
Zinc is on the US critical minerals list. Galvanised steel depends on it, and while the United States mines zinc, it imports most of its refined metal, so smelter outages abroad can tighten its market.
Stockatomics publishes a monthly US benchmark price for zinc in US dollars per kg contained, reading as of October 2026. The price is for contained zinc metal, not for concentrate and not for a treatment charge.
