Ivanhoe Mines is a Vancouver-based mining company founded by Robert Friedland, best known for discovering and developing the Kamoa-Kakula copper complex in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which it co-owns with China's Zijin Mining. It has restarted the historic Kipushi zinc mine nearby and is bringing the Platreef platinum group metals, nickel and copper project in South Africa into production.
Ivanhoe Mines is linked to copper and zinc. Kamoa-Kakula produces high-grade copper concentrate and, with its own smelter, copper anode, while Kipushi produces zinc concentrate from one of the highest-grade zinc deposits in the world. Platreef, its South African project, adds platinum group metals together with nickel and copper.
Kamoa-Kakula and Kipushi are in the Democratic Republic of Congo's Lualaba and Haut-Katanga provinces, while Platreef lies in South Africa's Limpopo province near Mokopane. Ivanhoe Mines also explores the Western Forelands near Kamoa-Kakula.
